Sometimes it’s hard to know when something needs to change. That’s as true for home maintenance as it is for anything else. We tend to wait until the very last minute to make repairs that we should have made earlier. But knowing what signs to look out for can help you know when it’s time to make a change before things go from bad to worse. So if you’re wondering if you need new windows, here are a few sure-fire signs it’s time to repair or replace them.

Sign #1: They’re damaged or warped.

This one’s pretty obvious, and you can diagnose it with a glance. While it’s sometimes possible to repair a window instead of replacing it entirely, a repair may only fix things temporarily. Replacing a badly damaged window, sash, or frame is almost always better than trying to repair it. If your windows stick when you try to open (or close) them, refuse to stay open, fog up when it’s raining, or allow in a draft, you need to replace them.

Sign #2: Your energy bill is too high.

According to Energy.gov, drafty windows can increase your energy bills by as much as 25%! Installing newer, more energy-efficient windows can help reduce your heating and cooling bills and give you a significant selling point when you’re ready to list your home.

Sign #3: Your home lacks curb appeal.

If the outside of your home is looking drab and tired, putting in new windows is like giving your home a bright new set of contact lenses. Other steps that may help: repainting the shutters and/or trim, or changing the type of window you have installed.

Sign #4: You live in a weather-prone area.

Coastal homes or homes in other areas prone to severe weather need extra care and protection because of their increased exposure to the elements. Check the integrity of your windows regularly and especially after a severe storm, and if you find recurring signs of damage, consider replacing your windows with a hardier material.

Like any home improvement, window replacement doesn’t have to break the bank, but you should still seek high quality over low cost.
